PAC Updates

7/11/14

http://www.afscme.org/blog/the-wage-war-for-public-workers-unions#.U8BKpFY7NeI.aolmail  This was a very intelligent observation from an economist. It smacks of real-world consequences when the Supreme Court becomes involved with union rights. That’s why it is imperative we make our unions strong but also visible to the public, to show we won’t stand for debilitating rulings without a fight. Bring it on. Larry

These are the endorsements from the interviews in Batavia, on Saturday June 28, 2014.  The interviews consisted of 1/2 hour time allotments in front of the combined PAC West Committees for the 14 Western NY/ Southern Tier counties. They are Region 6 PAC West recommendations that will be submitted to CSEA in Albany.

Senate District 55     Ted O’Brien(I) endorsed over Rich Funke

Assembly     District 60     Mark Grisanti(I) endorsed over Stocker Panepinto (Primary/General)

District 63     Tim Kennedy(I) endorsed over Betty Jean Grant (Primary)

District 138    Harry Bronson(I) endorsed over Peterson Vasquez (General)

District 141   Crystal Peoples-Stokes(I) endorsed over Antoine Thompson (Primary)

Mark Grisanti was excused, Peterson Vasquez was unavailable due to no reply on a short return notice & Antoine Thompson was advised not to run for election at this time, so an invite was not offered at this time.

All the candidates were well-versed on the topic of the Taylor Law(no strike) & the Triborough Amendment (old contract remains in effect until a new one is ratified). This will be a contentious issue when our next contract is due.  The politicians in Albany want the Triborough Amendment removed. That would involve minimum wages & no benefits until a new contract is ratified. Albany says it gives the unions too much bargaining power to not negotiate in earnest. I say it offsets the no-strike Taylor Law.  It balances who yields the negotiating power. One issue I would like resolved is, start negotiating early enough, so each side does not have their backs against the wall, come deadline time.  We, who work for the State & are represented by CSEA, are the ones who have the most to gain & also the ones who have the most to lose. Thanks for listening. Larry
